This coming weekend should be fun. In addition to it being a 3 day holiday, the 4th of July is my birthday! No big whoop there but there’s always fireworks! Locally though, we have our first Saturday of the month’s Arts Alive and this month there’s a new gallery opening featuring some of the best of Humboldt’s artists. Located in a LARGE space previously occupied by our beloved Plaza Design which relocated to G Street. Jack Sewell, a local sculptor has taken over the space and along with his wife Amy they have done the leg work and homework needed to become not so small business owners in the form of this great new gallery. There was a soft, soft opening last Friday for the artists where we all gave kudos to the Sewells for taking on this commitment to the art community, drank wine, ate great food prepared by John Sallizoni and basically shmoozed and saw folks we hadn’t seen in a while. Here’s a link to an article in our local North Coast Journal about Jack and the opening of the gallery. The inaugural exhibition begins in July and I will have a few pastels to show including this new landscape.

And then fireworks! Have a Happy and Safe 4th!

I just wrapped up my annual open studio as part of Humboldt County’s North Coast Open Studios. I have a home based business so I’m opening my home as well as my studio. This is the 8th year I have participated in the event and by now, my husband, daughter and I have our system down to a well oiled machine. My daughter is graduating from high school in a few weeks and Saturday was senior prom so I didn’t expect to have her around to help – she has a job now and a lot of freedom to come and go so when I saw that she was up and preparing the food for the guests it warmed my heart. Taking prom pictures at 5;00 while wrapping up paintings that had sold was not easy….I had to pull in one of my neighbors who was visiting to help with my daughter’s date’s boutonniere (thank you Sue!) All in all the weekend was a success and we had a steady stream of visitors and placed a surprising amount of paintings with the locals, most of which were new collectors of my work. THANK YOU HUMBOLDT COUNTY!

I thought it might be of interest to post some images from my Open Studio Tour to give you an idea of how I do it. I showcase the framed originals in my great room and down our main hallway that leads directly to the studio which is located in two sections of our finished five car garage – a major selling point when we bought our home nearly 10 years ago. I have a separate “clean room” that is a finished one car garage with a skylight and has a door to the painting room. The clean room is used for storage, packing and shipping and will soon be divided for use as an oil painting studio as well. There is direct access to a half bath for cleanup. The pastel studio is just the right size to keep the dust contained. There is a nice big window and enough wall space for me to mount my surfaces to the acoustic panels to work on. I prefer working standing up – I always have. I think I am more the exception than the rule when it comes to how I work with pastels. I usually see the easel approach utilized. I work large sometimes and like to work on more than one piece at a time and working on the wall makes that possible. For Open Studios I showcased finished pieces on the studio walls -unframed and sold work with a discount for framing at Eureka Art and Frame – my favorite framer on the north coast. Enjoy the studio tour. Additional photos can be seen on my Facebook page which can be accessed through the tab on the right. I’m taking today to recuperate after working the last two weeks without a day off. Would love your comments.

Its that time of year again…… Open Studios. What does that mean? Among other things it means I have to clean my cluttered studio. The hardest part is deciding when to stop painting and start cleaning. I often wonder about other artists’ habits in this regard. Some people by virtue of their temperment and personality are very organized and tidy. I do keep a pretty clean home overall and things are for the most part in their place but somehow I do tend to just want to get down to business when I get into my work space while I try to keep it simple – I can see that I could use some downsizing in the area of useless stored materials. I have promised myself to “get on that” and “deal with the pile” that is taking over valuable real estate that could otherwise be used for secondary painting space. It could be time to hire an organizer because it just seems to not happen and now my guests will have to gingerly navigate through the junk. Its really not that bad. I’d just rather paint up to the last minute!

Open Studios is always lovely because the studio is tidied and presented and paintings are available for exhibition and sale throughout my home and studio space. I have an “Off the Wall” sale where collectors can negotiate on purchase pastels unframed right off the studio wall complete with a discounted coupon for framing at Eureka Art and Frame. There is usually a nice flow of visitors throughout the weekend and my family chips in and hosts our guests and gives tours and offers refreshments. Living in an arts friendly area is rewarding and always amazes me. I’ve gotten to know some pretty cool folks over the years in my own home!

If you are in or near Eureka this weekend please do come by Open Studios. I will be open from 11-5 Saturday and Sunday at 2286 Ralphs Ct., Eureka. Guidebooks will be available in the paper and around town. Posted above is a recent local landscape from a day in Loleta. Winters in Humboldt have their own beauty. As I was painting, the song “Blue on Blue” kept going through my mind, thus the title. I guess its an old song but if you’re a boomer it’ll come to you.

The question of what a painter chooses as subject matter can sometimes be compared to an author. The best writing tends to come from what you know. I’ve been concentrating on landscapes for years more on than off and as my surroundings have changed so has my focus and direction. I started painting in Southern California and my early work dealt with that light and color sense. I also lived in the suburbs so I found inspiration in suburban architecture. Living in the Bay Area of California opened me up to the carved and othewise altered landscape of vineyards and farmland which for me was like stepping to an abundant waterfall of inspiration. Living in Humboldt County for the past 8 years has opened me up to a different sense of light, mood and terrain. I love the muse my area provides yet I still am drawn to the geometry and colors of the vineyards that pepper the landscape from California into Oregon. This is my visual playground and with my road trips and ever burgeoning photo library I have a plethora of imagery that continues to call me. While I am usually excited about a recent expedition to go into the studio to explore I return often to trips and images from my past and revisit them in the studio. There are many times I do not know what I am going to be painting on a particular day. I visit my Iphoto libarary and a sequence of images will speak to me visually and I am on my way.

Here are some recent paintings. I have been hooked on rural architecture for months now, segueing back into vineyards. Other new pastels are posted in the Pastel Library and under Rural Architecture.

Its been an exciting month. Open Studios was successful thanks to my loyal repeat and new collectors here in Humboldt County. I spent the next few weeks working on commissions while attending my daughter’s softball Tournament of Champions in the evenings. They won! Now its on to All Stars for the summer. I guess I know what we’ll be doing.

I also have been completing new pastels including the piece above which is from the Winter Wildflower series. That subtle winter light drew me in once more….this painting had to be done but now I’m drawn to the light of early summer that is just now peeking out on the North Coast of California.

I also was forced to update my whole computer system which is still a work in progress insofar as transferring files and data over to my new system goes. I’m determined to figure this all out as much as I can on my own. Even my pragmatism has a right brain slant so my technological skills are no different. I will say though, that this new IMAC system is pretty much how I expected computers to work 12 years ago….but they didn’t. At least this system has prompts!

Lastly, Bruce and I had a wonderful weekend in the Bay Area that included completing an installation for new collectors S & D. Thank you so much for acquiring 10 original pastels for your beautiful home! I think we were all delirious by the time we left (it was after all over 100 degrees that day) but the entire collection is looking incredible!

I’ll post more new images soon!

In addition to being a full time artist, wife and mom and other self induced labels, I also have been a marketing coach to artists for years. Locally I am a consultant to the Humboldt Del Norte Small Business Development Center. Its a great little gig…I get to meet with artists at various stages of their careers and help them launch further. Its interesting because I’ve found that it has as much to do with coaching as consulting. Artists sometimes need to know they are as ready and worthy as they think they are. Sometimes they need guidance and a little remedial training before putting out a full scale effort. Whatever the case may be I truly love watching these artists succeed. In addition to the marketing advice I am their hand holder, mother, guide, cheerleader. I am truly inspired by these artists and their willingness to try at all cost to make their livelihoods creating art and for the most part I’ve been duly impressed by their work.

When I was just getting out of college in 1982 my expectations were low but I put my work in juried shows and had some beginners luck in establishing myself in the corporate collector market. I parlayed that into further gallery exposure combined with teaching for a while. In the late 1990′s the internet opened everything up and access to information was like a gift from the universe. No more going to the museum bookstore to purchase the latest book on art marketing. I was in heaven and completely overhauled my business plan. I was about as happy as a parent maintaining a career could be until this bloodbath of a recession blew across the planet. Though it has been rumbling for a while I’d say that for most it hit hard this past fall. I’ve ridden through a few recessions in the past without incident but I dare say this could be different. I have no illusions and neither should anyone else. This is serious. I’m still in the holding my breath phase as it hasn’t had a deleterious affect as of yet but I wonder about the upcoming months and even years.

On the flip side its also a very good time to produce your best work in the studio, network, reassess, and revisit your business plan. Social networking has produced a brave new world for artists to source out new audiences and perhaps new venues for exhibition and representation. Take advantage of Facebook, Linkedin and even Twitter (which I am slow to learn.) Or start a blog. I admit, I’ve a little lax on developing my own but hey, I’m wearing many hats these days and didn’t feel the need until, well, last fall. But I am the eternal optimist and I continue to plug along and encourage others to do the same. Collectors still want their art and when all this messiness is sorted out we artists will still be here, producing away. Ultimately its not about marketing at all but rather the creative impulse, the urge to forge ideas and visual delights. I’m hanging in there and encourage everyone else to do the same.

I was drawn to this composition because of the strong blue sky reflection in this closed in waterway near my home in Eureka. The winter brush and spent wildflowers had an amazing depth of color to play with. This is one of the paintings that will be featured in my upcoming show at Art Brokers in Sausalito. I will post additional images from the show in upcoming days.

I’ve wondered why I rarely paint seascapes since I’ve lived on the Pacific coast for the past 7 years. I think I should make that be one of my challenges…

One of my favorite new surfaces to work on is UART sanded pastel paper. Similar to Ersta, which was not ph neutral and therefore not a suitable choice, the UART has a great sanded surface that holds pastel well. Unlike Sennelier LaCarte, which is great for slowly building glazes of color, the UART creates a painterly surface. Many layers can be developed with thick applications. It is a completely different way of working than with the LaCarte and I love the abillity to chance course. Especially since I have started working in oils again since last year, working with the UARt really opens up a new experience in painting in pastel. These paintings are from a series I am developing from a trip to Ashland Oregon in November. The light on the river running through Lithia park made for a plethora of great views to explore.
